The Federal Government of Nigeria has expressed support for the decision of the Lagos State Government to ban Styrofoam and other single-use plastics.
The Minister of State for Environment, Iziaq Salako, noted that the ban is a strong signal that the issue of single-use plastics needs comprehensive addressing for Nigeria to achieve its environmental sustainability agenda.
The minister commended Lagos State’s bold decision and revealed that the Federal Ministry of Environment has inaugurated an interagency committee to consult across government, businesses, and stakeholders for a sustainable solution.
Salako emphasized that the poorly regulated and indiscriminate use of plastics must be addressed, indicating that the banning of some plastic products is inevitable. The ministry is reportedly examining policies and initiatives to drive the production of plastic alternatives. Nigerians are urged to take personal actions to reduce and reuse plastics and explore recycling options.
A robust awareness campaign will be rolled out to prepare citizens for the eventual ban and promote holistic circular waste management.
Note: The Lagos State Government recently announced the banning of single-use plastics, particularly non-biodegradable Styrofoam, due to environmental concerns.
