The Federal Government of Nigeria has granted the groundbreaking innovation patent to the National Root Crops Research Institute (NRCRI), Umudike, for a series of optimised turmeric formulations that significantly enhance the health benefits of this indigenous crop.

The Executive Director of NRCRI Umudike, Professor Chiedozie Egesi, taking to his LinkedIn page, expressed profound gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu GCFR for creating an enabling environment for scientific breakthroughs through the Renewed Hope Agenda.

According to him, the newly patented products included:

– Non-activated turmeric #tea from rhizomes,

– Activated turmeric tea for enhanced curcumin release,

– Turmeric green tea from leaves

“Delighted to announce that the Federal Government of Nigeria has granted the National Root Crops Research Institute (NRCRI) Umudike Nigeria a groundbreaking innovation patent for optimized #turmeric formulations, unlocking its full potential for overall wellness!

“This innovation positions NRCRI at the forefront of value-added natural products and strengthens Nigeria’s growing bio-economy. This is central to the Renewed Hope Agenda on Food and Nutrition Security of Mr. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu GCFR.

“Patent Ref: RP:NG/PT/NC/0/2024/15488. Date of Patent: 11 Dec 2024. Proud of NRCRI research team. Proud of NRCRI. Proud of Nigeria,” he said.

Agronigeria gathered that the patented formulations are expected to be commercialised in the coming months, with plans already underway for large-scale production and partnerships with private-sector investors.

This development further strengthens Nigeria’s growing reputation in agricultural biotechnology and value-chain development while contributing directly to the nation’s goals of economic diversification, job creation, and improved public health.
