The federal government has unveiled an ambitious target to distribute five million Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) cylinders to households nationwide by 2030, as part of efforts to scale up clean energy use and improve public health.
Unveiled in Sokoto State during the launch of the LPG penetration programme, the initiative is a core component of Nigeria’s Decade of Gas strategy. Under the plan, one million households are expected to switch to clean cooking gas annually over the next five years, reducing dependence on firewood and other polluting fuels.
According to the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Gas), the LPG drive goes beyond energy access. “This programme is not just about energy,it’s about economic empowerment,” he said, noting that the effort will create jobs throughout the LPG value chain while strengthening the role of local manufacturers and distributors.
The minister urged beneficiaries to use the gas cylinders responsibly and serve as clean energy ambassadors in their communities.
The private sector is also backing the project. BUA Group is partnering with the government to expand cylinder distribution, a move expected to increase LPG access in underserved areas and support the growth of small-scale businesses involved in energy retail and distribution.
The initiative forms part of Nigeria’s broader clean energy transition agenda, with particular focus on supporting micro and small enterprises engaged in sustainable energy services.
