Nigeria’s Minister of Education has affirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to using technology and innovation to transform the country’s education sector, with a strong focus on Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET).
During a recent visit to the Innov8 Hub’s Innovation Start-up Hub in Abuja, the Minister described TVET as a cornerstone of the government’s Nigerian Education Sector Renewal Initiative, a national plan aimed at positioning education as a key pillar of economic transformation.
He noted that TVET is central to Nigeria’s shift toward a knowledge-driven economy, adding that innovation hubs like Innov8 have already trained over 7,000 Nigerians in practical, industry-relevant skills.
To expand access to such opportunities, the Ministry announced plans to establish 18 Innovation and Entrepreneurship Centres across tertiary institutions in the country. These centres will serve as breeding grounds for creative thinking, enterprise development, and technical training for young Nigerians.
The Minister also disclosed plans to launch a National Research and Development Fund supported by a dedicated agency, which will provide funding for homegrown research and innovations that align with Nigeria’s development goals.
He emphasized that the Ministry will continue to build strategic partnerships with innovation hubs to prepare both current and future generations for a rapidly evolving world of work.
The initiative marks another step in the government’s wider push to align education with the demands of the modern economy by equipping Nigerians with the skills, tools, and platforms needed to innovate, solve problems, and thrive.
