An environmental firm, ZLGA Waterways Limited, in partnership with the Rural Women Energy Security Initiative (RWESI), has launched a nationwide programme to train two million rural women across Nigeria in climate-smart agribusiness and renewable energy use.
The initiative, tagged Climate-Smart Agronomy Programme, aims to equip women in rural communities with the knowledge and tools to adopt sustainable farming methods, reduce carbon emissions, and build profitable green ventures.
Programme Coordinator, Dr. Abiola Bashorun, disclosed in a statement on Thursday that over two million women have already registered for the training, which will be implemented across the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.
“The Climate-Smart Agronomy Programme will empower rural women with practical skills in modern farming, renewable energy, and environmental protection,” Bashorun said. “It is about building resilience, improving livelihoods, and positioning women as key drivers of the green economy.”
She explained that the project would focus on areas such as solar irrigation, biogas production, and clean cookstove adoption, all aimed at reducing dependence on fossil fuels while promoting sustainable income generation.
According to Bashorun, the collaboration between ZLGA Waterways and RWESI will create new income streams, jobs, and market opportunities for women farmers while enhancing food security through climate-resilient practices.
“This initiative will help farmers achieve higher yields, minimise post-harvest losses, and improve soil fertility through sustainable agronomic techniques,” she added. “We encourage all women, regardless of age or social status, to join this movement toward environmental and economic sustainability.”
The two organisations formalised their partnership through a Memorandum of Understanding signed in Abuja earlier this week, with both parties pledging to work closely with government agencies and local communities to scale the programme nationwide.
Bashorun emphasised that the initiative aligns with Nigeria’s climate action and food security goals, contributing to the country’s efforts to promote green growth and build a more inclusive agricultural economy.
“We must act now to protect our planet and create a more sustainable world for future generations,” she said.
The training comes at a time when the Federal Government is promoting climate-smart agriculture through national investment plans designed to increase food production and resilience in the face of climate change.
