The First Bank of Nigeria English International, District 9110, has taken a significant step towards empowering individuals across various trades by distributing N20 million worth of start-up kits to 102 beneficiaries in Lagos.
The distributed start-up kits include grinding machines, plumbing kits, deep freezers, sewing machines, generators, gas burners and cylinders, barbers and hairdressers kits, among others.
During the presentation, Ms Helen Ihonre, Unit Head, Other SME Products E-Business and Retail, FirstBank, offered insights on financial management and economic discipline, stressing the importance of maintaining records and accessing low-interest loans to support business growth.
She urged beneficiaries to prioritize saving from the inception of their businesses and discouraged keeping funds at home, emphasizing the benefits of opening a bank account.
Rotary District 9110 Governor, Ifeyinwa Ejezie, highlighted the significance of economic empowerment in Rotary’s initiatives and called for government collaboration to effectively reach grassroots communities. She emphasized Rotary’s role in complementing government efforts and urged for recognition and partnership to enhance community development.
Bukola Bakare, Rotary International District Governor Nominee Designate, explained the fundraising process and challenges faced, highlighting the partnership with Rotary from Singapore to mitigate shocks from inflation.
Mr Babatunde Adewale, Permanent Board Member, Lagos State Universal Basic Education, commended the empowerment program and reiterated SUBEB’s commitment to collaborating with Rotary.
Mrs Kemi Kalesanwo, Director, Lagos State Agency for Mass Education, praised the collaboration with Rotary and First Bank, highlighting the impact on vocational training centers.
Otumba Wemmy Osunde, Chairman, IIlisan Development Association, Ogun State, pledged personal commitment to ensuring beneficiaries utilize the items for economic gain.
Adekunmi Adeniyi, one of the beneficiaries, expressed gratitude to Rotary International and First Bank for the initiative, acknowledging its impact on their respective trades and crafts.
