When you are starting your business, and if it’s a solo-venture you may not need a staff immediately because you are still reiterating your idea, business model or business plan. However, as you make some headway in the direction of growth and sustainability, you may begin to consider having someone fulltime to help you with stability and in building a workforce.

At this stage, there are 10 tips you can employ;

  1. Identify your greatest weakness as the owner and find an employee to fill that gap.
  2. Hiring an employee that is your mini-me is your 1st mistake, you need someone to do what you can’t.
  3. The business you’re in should determine your 1st employee. But overall, a great sales person is a general need.
  4. You may not be able to pay an accountant but you can pay an organization to help you with your financials monthly or quarterly while you use a simple software daily.
  5. How about using contract staff? They don’t cost as much.
  6. Hire staff that have a history of loyalty, as a startup your need those who will stay with you through the tough times.
  7. Family & friends may be the death of your business but they are the most likely to work for you on little or no pay. Find the balance if you can.
  8. Think; what can I get by barter instead of cash? What can I offer for services?
  9. Determine your immediate needs & find someone to fulfill them, don’t be stuck on your org structure, that’s for the future.
  10. Get a growth plan for your business, that will show you where most your responsibilities will come from.

With these few tips, you should be able to find yourself the right assistance in building a sustainable startup into a thriving enterprise.
