 Foundational Learning Research Grants 2025 – Up to $15,000 for Africa-Based Researchers

The REAL Centre (University of Cambridge) and ESSA have launched a research grant opportunity to support Africa-based foundational learning research, offering up to US$15,000 per award for researchers working in Ghana, Kenya, Senegal, or Zambia. The initiative is designed to strengthen locally led education research and provide evidence to inform policy and practice.

 What You’ll Receive

  • Research funding of up to $15,000 per award;
  • Support for research costs such as data collection, materials, dissemination, and collaboration meetings.
  • Opportunity to publish findings and influence education policy in Africa.

 Eligibility

Applicants must:

  • Be based in and citizens of Ghana, Kenya, Senegal or Zambia.
  • Be affiliated with a university, research institute or government entity.
  • Submit proposals in English (and in French for Senegal-based applicants).

 Deadline

Friday, 31 October 2025 (11:59 PM GMT) (essa-africa.org)

Foundational learning (basic literacy and numeracy) is a critical step in children’s lifelong education but remains weak across many African countries. By funding local researchers, ESSA and the REAL Centre are enabling solutions that are contextually grounded and policy-relevant.
