Clean cooking startup GAS360 and climate advisory company Modern West Advisory (MWA) have formed a partnership with the aim of accelerating access to clean cooking for one million households and reducing carbon emissions in Nigeria. The collaboration, facilitated in Abuja, is part of a larger initiative to promote clean energy use and address the challenge of over 75% of Nigeria’s population relying on solid fuel for household cooking.
GAS360 CEO, Emmanuel Uwandu, emphasized the need for stakeholders to collaborate in reducing carbon emissions. The partnership is expected to serve one million households over the next four years, providing clean cooking LPG and offering microfinancing to retailers. Uwandu highlighted the partnership with NESGAS Producing Ltd, which is constructing a 50,000 metric ton LPG depot in Onne, Rivers State, to enhance the distribution of LPG gas.
In response to challenges faced during the COVID-19 pandemic, Uwandu stated, “In 2020, more than 100,000 households reverted to using traditional fuels, such as charcoal and firewood. Our focus isn’t on targeting affluent individuals; rather, we aim to bolster small businesses, ensuring reliable supply and expanding their customer base.”
Modern West Advisory Managing Director, Otomi Afiegbe, expressed excitement about the partnership, emphasizing the commitment to ensuring clean cooking adoption nationwide. The collaboration aligns with efforts to promote sustainable practices, reduce carbon emissions, and enhance access to clean energy solutions in Nigeria.
Director-General of the National Council on Climate Change, Salisu Dahiru, highlighted the importance of carbon trading and enforcement mechanisms to incentivize organizations to adhere to climate change regulations in Nigeria. The partnership aims to contribute to the broader goal of environmental sustainability and clean energy access in the country.
