The Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition (GAIN) has awarded grants totaling N48 million to 16 businesses in Nigeria under its Strengthening Nutrition in Priority Staples (SNIPS) project. The microgrant funding, amounting to N3 million each, aims to support food security and nutrition initiatives in four states: Benue, Kaduna, Oyo, and Nasarawa.
Dr. Michael Ojo, Country Director of GAIN Nigeria, highlighted the significance of the grants in promoting access to affordable, nutritious food options essential for healthy living and sustainable development. The awarded businesses have demonstrated dedication and innovation in furthering the mission of nutrition.
The grant recipients, primarily focused on staples such as cassava, maize, and sweet potatoes, have enriched these products with essential nutrients to enhance daily diets. Government officials from the respective states commended GAIN’s efforts and expressed commitment to improving nutrition and food security.
The SNIPS project, funded by the German Government and administered by GAIN Nigeria, aims to promote access to safe and nutritious foods, particularly through vitamin A-fortified staples. The initiative supports entrepreneurs across the supply chain, from production to consumption, fostering holistic growth and sustainability.
Beneficiaries of the grants expressed gratitude for the timely intervention, emphasizing its potential to improve their businesses and contribute to addressing hunger and malnutrition in Nigeria. The awards ceremony featured cultural performances, awards conferment, and exhibitions showcasing products from the grant beneficiaries.
Through initiatives like SNIPS, GAIN continues its mission to advance food security and nutrition, empowering entrepreneurs and communities across Nigeria.
