Google and Africa Union Celebrate Africa's Diversity with "DiscoverMyAfrica" Shorts Challenge
Share

The #DiscoverMyAfrica Shorts Challenge, a collaboration between the Office of the African Union Chairperson’s Youth Envoy and Google, is set to unfold, spotlighting Africa’s vibrant cultures through short videos shared by YouTube creators across the continent this May.

Chido Mpemba, the African Union Chairperson’s Youth Envoy, underlined the initiative’s pivotal role in empowering African youth to globally showcase their narratives and cultural richness. Teaming up with Google opens avenues for creative expression and discussions on content responsibility, digital preservation, and AI’s influence on Africa’s creative sectors, in line with the African Union’s vision for a digitally-enabled Africa.

YouTube creators are called upon to unveil the essence of African life, encompassing music, art, cuisine, fashion, and local heritage, using the hashtag #DiscoverMyAfrica. Furthermore, YouTube Music Nights in Nigeria and South Africa will spotlight Afrobeats and Amapiano rhythms, with curated playlists featuring emerging talents and iconic voices from the continent’s music scene.

Exclusive shows like “Spa with Osas,” “All of Us,” and “Shaggi’s Palava” will debut on YouTube, offering immersive glimpses into various facets of African culture and entertainment.

Tailored workshops, including a Nollywood workshop in Nigeria and #DiscoverMyAfrica sessions for content creators, will furnish invaluable insights and tools to budding filmmakers and content creators at every level.

Addy Awofisayo, head of music for sub-Saharan Africa at YouTube, underscored the platform’s dedication to amplifying Africa’s diverse voices and talents, furnishing crucial resources and platforms for African creatives to disseminate their narratives and engage with global audiences.
