The National Rubber Producers, Processors, and Marketers Association of Nigeria (NARPPMAN) in the South-West has called on the federal government and regional governors to implement policies that will enhance rubber production. The association asserts that rubber is vital for boosting Nigeria’s economy, emphasizing that no economy can thrive without it.
Oluwatoyin Jeremiah, NARPPMAN’s Vice President for the South-West, stated that rubber cultivation could generate billions for the region and significantly reduce unemployment. He warned, “Any economy that relegates rubber will depend largely on the importation of rubber products, which can negatively impact the country’s economy.”
Speaking at the fifth Odua International Trade Fair, Jeremiah highlighted the high-value chain of rubber and its potential to create numerous jobs for Nigerians if fully utilized. He expressed the association’s goal of raising awareness about rubber’s importance in combating poverty and creating job opportunities for youth.
Jeremiah pointed to historical precedents, noting how former regional leader Obafemi Awolowo utilized rubber alongside other agricultural products to develop the South-West long before the oil boom. He emphasized that Western states in Nigeria offer higher salaries than the federal government due to the diverse agricultural enterprises in the region.
The association also urged financial institutions to partner with the government in providing financial support to rubber farmers. Peter Igbinoson, NARPPMAN’s National President, stressed the need to encourage youth involvement in rubber plantation and production, suggesting it could provide a sustainable livelihood if effectively maximized.
