IFC and Lenmed Partner to Expand Quality Healthcare in Africa

The International Finance Corporation (IFC) and Lenmed Hospital Group (Lenmed) have announced a strategic partnership aimed at expanding access to quality healthcare services in South Africa, Botswana, Ghana, and Mozambique. This initiative focuses on underserved communities and aims to enhance healthcare infrastructure and services in these regions.

 

Key Aspects of the Partnership

  1. Financial Support:

   – Local Currency Loan: IFC will provide a R200 million senior loan to Lenmed.

   – Syndicated Loan Package: A larger loan package totaling R2.5 billion involves Rand Merchant Bank, Ashburton Asset Managers, and ABSA Bank.

   – Purpose of Funding: The financing will be used for the acquisition of new facilities, medical equipment, and hiring and training additional medical staff. It will also support Lenmed’s expansion into other African countries and meet its refinancing and working capital needs.

 

  1. 2. Expansion Plans:

   – Increase in Hospital Beds: Lenmed plans to expand its number of beds from 2,318 to almost 3,000.

   – Geographical Expansion: The partnership supports Lenmed’s plans to extend its reach into new African markets.

 

  1. 3. Sustainability and Standards:

   – Environmental and Social Standards: IFC will assist Lenmed in improving its environmental and social standards, ensuring sustainability across its operations.

 

Amil Devchand, Chief Executive Officer of Lenmed said 

“We are extremely excited to have concluded this significant debt package with IFC and our other funding partners, which underscores the confidence in both our Group and the work that we do. This additional capital will allow us to continue driving towards achieving our ambitious growth strategy while, at the same time, fulfilling our core purpose of creating healthier and more prosperous communities across the African continent.”

 

Cláudia Conceição, Regional Director for Southern Africa at IFC:

“Our investment in Lenmed will increase access to quality healthcare in South Africa and other African countries, enabling more people to access the services they need. IFC complements public healthcare efforts by leveraging private sector funding and expertise to increase access and meet growing demand for services.”

 

 Healthcare Services Offered by Lenmed

Lenmed caters to multiple income groups and provides a wide range of acute healthcare services across its markets. These services include:

– Trauma care

– Cardiac services

– Pediatric care

– Maternal care

– Acute and emergency care

– Cancer treatment

– Orthopedics

– Neurosurgery

This partnership between IFC and Lenmed represents a significant step towards improving healthcare infrastructure and services in several African countries. By leveraging private sector funding and expertise, the initiative aims to meet the growing demand for healthcare services and contribute to the overall well-being and prosperity of communities across the continent.
