The Kano State Government has disbursed N807 million in grants to 5,380 youths across the state to support small-scale enterprises and promote economic self-reliance.
At a ceremony held in Kano on Tuesday, the state government announced that each beneficiary received N150,000 to either start or expand their businesses. The youths were selected from all 44 local government areas of the state.
Governor Abba Yusuf said the initiative aims to empower young people, encourage entrepreneurship, and stimulate economic growth at the grassroots. He stressed the vital role youths play in governance, economic development, and community building, adding that the scheme would help them shift from being job seekers to job creators.
“Our focus is on building a generation of innovative and self-reliant youths who will contribute meaningfully to the growth of our economy,” the governor said, pledging that his administration would sustain the empowerment programme.
He urged the beneficiaries to use the funds responsibly and approach their ventures with discipline, creativity, and a long-term vision for growth and sustainability.
Some of the recipients expressed appreciation for the support, describing the intervention as timely and impactful. One of them, Malam Musa Tanko, said he planned to use his N150,000 grant to start a small business selling tea and instant noodles. Another beneficiary, Rabi Habu from Yankaba in Nasarawa Local Government Area, commended the state government for recognising the potential of young people and supporting them to become business owners.
The initiative is part of the state’s broader efforts to tackle unemployment, promote entrepreneurship, and strengthen the small business sector, which is widely regarded as a critical driver of economic development in Kano and across Nigeria.
