Karpowership Announces $1 Billion LNG-to-Power Infrastructure Investment in South African
Share

Karpowership, a leading global energy company known for its innovative gas-to-power solutions, has announced a significant investment of $1 billion in LNG-to-Power infrastructure in Mozambique. This transformative project is designed to not only boost Mozambique’s domestic energy capabilities but also enhance the broader Southern African Power Pool (SAPP), providing reliable and low-cost electricity to approximately 5 million people across the region.

A Groundbreaking Initiative for Regional Energy Security

The project will feature a cutting-edge natural gas-powered facility with a capacity of up to 500 MW, including one of the world’s largest Powerships and a Floating Storage Regasification Unit (FSRU). This development builds on Karpowership’s existing operations in Mozambique, where the company has been a key energy partner since 2016, supplying 115 MW of electricity to land-locked Zambia.

Karpowership’s new investment will leverage Mozambique’s domestic gas resources, creating substantial new opportunities for both the country and the wider region. The energy generated could be supplied to Mozambique’s electricity utility, Electricidade de Mozambique (EdM), or exported to neighboring countries within the SAPP region, including Zambia, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Namibia, and others.

Strengthening Mozambique’s Energy Infrastructure

Karpowership has already made significant contributions to Mozambique’s energy security through its operations in Nacala Bay, where it has been providing electricity since 2018. The company recently showcased one of their advanced Powerships at the Port of Maputo, similar to the one planned for the new project, highlighting its capacity to deliver fast and flexible power solutions.

Zeynep Harezi Yılmaz, Chief Operating Officer of Karpowership, expressed excitement about the deepening partnership with Mozambique, stating, “Karpowership is proud to serve as a committed partner to Mozambique, and we are thrilled to be deepening that relationship. Together, we are creating a vehicle that will power the wider region from Mozambique – addressing regional electricity deficits and enhancing economic activity.”

Economic and Social Impact

This substantial investment is expected to generate significant direct and indirect job opportunities in Mozambique, as well as foster collaboration with both public and private sector entities. Karpowership remains dedicated to driving sustainable energy solutions and contributing to the socio-economic development of Mozambique and the broader SAPP region. This latest initiative underscores the company’s commitment to supporting regional growth and enhancing energy security across Southern Africa.
