Lafarge Africa Plc has inaugurated a new Alternative Fuel and Raw Material (AFR) platform at its Mfamosing plant in Cross River State, marking a significant milestone in Nigeria’s construction industry. This move aligns with the company’s commitment to sustainability, carbon footprint reduction, and local economic empowerment.
Transforming Construction with Sustainability
The AFR platform replaces conventional fossil fuels with alternative energy sources derived from non-recyclable waste materials. Speaking at the commissioning event, Mr. Lolu Alade-Akinyemi, Lafarge Africa’s Group Managing Director/CEO, described the platform as a game-changer:
> “This facility will enable us to use alternative fuels and materials in our production, lowering CO2 emissions and positioning us as a leader in sustainable practices across Nigeria and Africa.”
Economic and Community Impact
Beyond environmental benefits, the AFR platform aims to drive local economic growth by creating job opportunities. **Alade-Akinyemi** highlighted its potential to boost employment through a supply chain involving collection, sorting, and delivery of materials to the plant. He noted that the facility would create demand for truck operators, logistics providers, and SMEs, empowering local communities economically.
Support from Government and Stakeholders
Government officials and stakeholders praised the initiative’s impact on sustainability and community development:
– Governor Bassey Otu, represented by Finance Commissioner Michael Odere, applauded the public-private collaboration, stating:
> “Today’s project by Lafarge reflects how public and private sectors can work hand-in-hand for sustainable development.”
– Moses Osogi, Commissioner for Environment, commended Lafarge’s leadership in environmental responsibility, emphasizing its role in transforming waste into wealth.
– Etukudo Etim, NUPRC State Coordinator, described the AFR platform as a “win-win” for the environment and economy.
Industry Collaboration and Net-Zero Goals
The platform is part of Lafarge Africa’s broader sustainability strategy, aligned with Holcim’s global net-zero commitment. Daniel Adedokun Head of Lafarge Geocycle, emphasized its alignment with Nigeria’s national ambition for net-zero emissions. He noted that the initiative strengthens partnerships with industries and communities while scaling sustainable practices.
Chevron Nigeria’s Eromosele Itala highlighted the collaboration between the oil and gas industry and Lafarge to address urban waste management challenges:
> “Since 2021, we’ve collaborated on managing spent waste, transforming it into alternative fuel for cement production. This partnership addresses one of our biggest urban challenges: sustainable waste management.”
Advancing the Circular Economy in Nigeria
The AFR system embodies Lafarge Africa’s commitment to a circular economy, reducing waste and CO2 emissions while fostering innovation and environmental stewardship. This project sets a precedent for sustainable development, combining economic, social, and environmental benefits in Nigeria’s journey toward a greener future.
