In a bold step toward sustainability and innovation in Nigeria’s construction sector, Lafarge Africa Plc, a leading provider of building solutions, has launched EcoCrete, the country’s first low-carbon ready-mix concrete.
EcoCrete is designed to deliver a minimum 20% reduction in CO₂ emissions compared to conventional CEM I concrete, while retaining the same level of performance, strength, and reliability. The product represents another milestone in Lafarge Africa’s mission to provide solutions that support sustainable building practices and Nigeria’s transition to a greener economy.
Marking the beginning of this rollout, Lafarge’s Abuja Ready-Mix (RMX) plant has been fully converted to 100% EcoCrete production, positioning the facility as a pioneer in low-carbon construction materials in the country.
Speaking at the launch, Lolu Alade-Akinyemi, Group Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of Lafarge Africa Plc, said the introduction of EcoCrete underscores the company’s ongoing commitment to innovation and decarbonization within Nigeria’s construction industry.
“The introduction of EcoCrete is another bold step in our mission to enable builders and our customers make smart choices and support Nigeria’s transition to a greener economy. Just like our ECOPlanet cement, EcoCrete represents a game-changing innovation that combines performance with reduced carbon footprint,” Alade-Akinyemi stated.
He further noted that EcoCrete broadens Lafarge’s portfolio of sustainable solutions, offering builders and contractors the opportunity to construct efficiently while reducing environmental impact.
Also highlighting the benefits of the new product, Derek Williamson, Head of Aggregates and Readymix at Lafarge Africa Plc, explained that EcoCrete offers superior performance across diverse applications, from housing projects to commercial buildings, as well as major infrastructure such as roads and bridges.
“EcoCrete provides superior performance while significantly reducing carbon emissions in the environment. It is versatile and reliable for a wide range of applications—from residential housing to commercial and infrastructure projects. With EcoCrete, builders and developers can now make environmentally conscious choices without compromising on strength, durability, or workability,” Williamson said.
The unveiling of EcoCrete not only reinforces Lafarge Africa’s reputation as an innovation-driven company but also signals a broader shift in Nigeria’s construction landscape. With the global call for sustainable practices growing louder, Lafarge Africa’s investment in eco-friendly building solutions places the company at the forefront of climate-conscious construction, paving the way for a future where development and sustainability go hand in hand.
