The Lagos State Government has unveiled a N150 billion Compressed Natural Gas Trucks Scheme, a public-private partnership aimed at helping truck operators acquire new, safer, and environmentally friendly vehicles. Announced during a stakeholders’ engagement with maritime and logistics practitioners, the initiative seeks to address the longstanding challenge of aging and unsafe trucks dominating the state’s major logistics corridors.
Represented by his Special Adviser on Transportation, the governor highlighted that many trucks on Lagos roads have exceeded their operational lifespan, with compromised braking systems, weakened frames, damaged tyres, and faulty lighting, posing risks to operators, road users, and goods. The state has already clamped down on rickety vehicles as part of broader efforts to reduce crashes and improve safety.
The scheme will be implemented in collaboration with financial institutions, including the United Bank for Africa, which will release the N150 billion in three tranches. Truck operators will have access to affordable, structured financing, enabling them to replace obsolete vehicles with brand-new CNG-powered trucks. The program is expected to modernize fleets, reduce highway breakdowns, improve turnaround times, and ensure compliance with international haulage standards.
The Commissioner for Transport announced that 2,000 CNG trucks will be made available under the initiative, reinforcing Lagos’ commitment to sustainability and environmental responsibility. The state is also expanding digital infrastructure for logistics management along key corridors, including Lekki, to improve transparency, reduce operational costs, and enhance the efficiency of goods movement.
Officials stressed that the success of the logistics sector depends on strong partnerships among government agencies, unions, operators, and development partners. Complementary programs such as free eye screening for drivers, substance abuse awareness, and drug testing initiatives will further enhance safety and operator welfare.
The CNG Trucks Scheme represents a significant step toward building a cleaner, safer, and more efficient logistics ecosystem in Lagos, aligning with the state’s broader goals of environmental sustainability and global competitiveness in freight transport.
