The Lagos State Government has signed a landmark waste management agreement with ZoomLion Nigeria, a subsidiary of the Jospong Group, in a strategic move to modernize the city’s waste disposal system and boost employment.
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, who oversaw the signing ceremony, hailed the agreement as a significant step toward addressing the state’s growing waste challenge. Lagos currently generates an estimated 13,000 tonnes of waste daily, making efficient management a critical priority for the state.
As part of the new arrangement, a Transfer Loading Station will be constructed at the Olusosun dumpsite, which is slated for eventual closure. From this station, approximately 2,500 tonnes of waste will be moved daily to a new Material Recovery Facility in Ikorodu. A similar system will be established at Solous III in Igando, with 1,500 tonnes of waste redirected to a recovery centre in Badagry.
“This partnership reflects our vision for a cleaner, healthier, and more liveable Lagos,” Governor Sanwo-Olu stated. “It supports our environmental agenda and commitment to aligning with global best practices in waste management.”
Beyond waste disposal, the project is expected to stimulate Lagos’ green economy, creating over 5,000 direct and indirect jobs. Opportunities will open up in recycling, logistics, facility management, and other segments, providing a platform for small and medium enterprises to thrive in the waste value chain.
As urban centres continue to struggle with the environmental impact of rapid population growth and industrialisation, Lagos is positioning itself as a model for cities looking to merge environmental reform with economic development. The collaboration with ZoomLion is expected to drive more sustainable waste handling practices while offering meaningful employment to thousands of residents.
Officials say the project aligns with the state’s broader agenda to improve public health, reduce pollution, and build a circular economy in Africa’s most populous city.
