The Lagos State Government, through the Lagos State Office for Disability Affairs (LASODA), has empowered about 100 elderly persons with disabilities and caregivers of children with disabilities across the state, reinforcing its commitment to inclusion and social protection.
The empowerment, disclosed on the government’s official X (formerly Twitter) handle, was carried out under LASODA’s annual programme, Cash Support and Medical Outreach to Elderly Persons with Disabilities and Elderly Caregivers. The initiative aims to enhance dignity, independence, and access to livelihood opportunities for vulnerable groups.
Speaking at the event on December 23, 2025, at the LASODA premises in Alausa, Ikeja, the General Manager, Adenike Oyetunde-Lawal, said the programme aligns with Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s administration’s vision to ensure that no resident is left behind.
She described the financial assistance as part of the state’s broader social welfare agenda, particularly for senior citizens living with disabilities. “In the past years, LASODA has implemented several impactful programmes that promote the independence, dignity and community engagement of persons with disabilities. At LASODA, inclusion is at the heart of everything we do,” Oyetunde-Lawal said.
The programme featured cash support and medical services for beneficiaries drawn from different parts of Lagos. According to Oyetunde-Lawal, the support is intended not only to meet personal needs and access healthcare services but also to enable small-scale livelihood activities that could improve the economic capacity of elderly persons and caregivers.
“The objective is simple yet powerful: to empower, not merely to give. We want beneficiaries to leverage the support to enhance their livelihoods, improve mobility, and participate fully in society,” she said.
Oyetunde-Lawal also addressed concerns from elderly parents about the long-term care of their children living with disabilities, assuring them of the government’s sustained engagement and support. She encouraged beneficiaries to remain resilient and engage with government agencies to further improve their quality of life.
Beneficiaries expressed gratitude for the timely intervention, particularly during the festive season. Many noted that the support would help them meet essential needs while also offering opportunities to expand small-scale economic activities, reflecting the state’s commitment to inclusive development.
