Lagos State Government Commits to Providing Enabling Environment for MSMEs
Share

Lagos State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to creating a supportive environment for Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), emphasizing the crucial role these businesses play in the state’s economic growth. The pledge was made during the closing ceremony of the 2025 Lagos International Trade Fair, held at Tafawa Balewa Square, Lagos Island.

Speaking on behalf of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, the Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Gbenga Omotoso, highlighted the administration’s efforts to strengthen the business climate through infrastructure development and business-friendly policies. “Our administration prioritizes enabling enterprises to thrive by providing critical infrastructure and streamlined processes for business registration, approvals, and operation,” he said.

Governor Sanwo-Olu pointed to major projects such as the Lekki Free Trade Zone, the Blue and Red rail lines, and ongoing road expansions as key drivers for investment and economic competitiveness. He also emphasized the partnership between Lagos State Government and the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI), which helps bridge policy formulation and private-sector needs.

According to the Governor, Lagos’ economy has grown significantly over the past five years, with its GDP rising by nearly 50 percent, surpassing the economies of more than 40 African countries. “MSMEs are the backbone of Lagos’ economy. We will continue to support them with infrastructure, investment, and digital platforms that make doing business easier,” he said.

The Commissioner for Commerce, Cooperatives, Trade and Investment, Folasade Bada Ambrose, noted that this year’s Trade Fair showcased the largest Lagos State Pavilion to date, hosting over 100 MSMEs and highlighting the state’s role as Nigeria’s commercial hub. LCCI President, Gabriel Idahosa, praised the government for its support, describing the partnership with the state as instrumental to expanding business opportunities for MSMEs.

In parallel with the Trade Fair, the Lagos State AIDS Control Agency (LSACA) conducted free HIV testing and counselling services, reaching over 700 exhibitors and visitors. Dr. Folakemi Animashaun, CEO of LSACA, described the turnout as highly encouraging and emphasized the importance of early detection and timely treatment in achieving epidemic control.

The event underscored Lagos State’s holistic approach to growth, combining infrastructure, policy support, health initiatives, and active engagement with entrepreneurs to ensure MSMEs not only survive but thrive in a competitive business environment.
