LIRS extends Deadline for Annual Tax Returns to February 7, 2024
Share

The Lagos State Internal Revenue Service (LIRS) has granted an extension for the filing of employers’ annual tax returns to February 7, 2024. The usual deadline for the submission of annual tax returns by companies is January 31 each fiscal year, with penalties applicable for defaulters.

The extension comes in response to recent downtime experienced on the e-Tax portal, providing taxpayers with additional time to ensure the timely submission of their annual tax returns. The Executive Chairman of LIRS, Ayodele Subair, emphasized the importance of employers taking advantage of this extension to fulfill their civic obligations and avoid potential penalties outlined in section 81(3) of the Personal Income Tax (Amendment) Act 2011.

Subair encouraged employers within Lagos State who may be facing difficulties in filing their annual tax returns to utilize the extension and reach out to the customer service center or visit help desks at various tax stations for assistance.

This decision to extend the deadline recognizes unforeseen circumstances that may arise, and the aim is to accommodate such instances while maintaining compliance with tax regulations. Subair urged employers to adhere to the revised deadline to avoid penalties and ensure statutory compliance. Earlier, on January 23, LIRS had reported a temporary downtime on its e-Tax platform, and efforts were underway to resolve the technical issue.
