The price of de-stoned local rice, popularly known as ‘Abakaliki rice,’ has fallen by 6-10% in Enugu markets, driving more residents to purchase the brand.
Dealers attribute the price reduction to the ongoing harvest season. At Ogbete Main Market, a 50-kg bag now costs ₦78,000, down from ₦84,000 in November, according to trader Mrs. Rose Nwakwo. Similarly, at Garki Market, a five-litre paint container of the rice sells for ₦6,500, compared to ₦7,500 previously, said dealer Mr. Chidi Orji.
Encouraging residents to stock up, Orji warned that prices might rise again. Many retailers and hawkers have also begun stockpiling the commodity, preparing for increased demand during the Yuletide season.
Mrs. Eunice Madu, a grain seller at Mayor Market, confirmed that improved processing and de-stoning quality have further boosted the appeal of local rice. “We are selling out almost all our available bags ahead of the Yuletide,” she noted.
Buyers like Mr. Edwin Okoh welcomed the price drop, expressing relief that he could now afford more than a bag of rice for his extended family. “It’s a joy that the price has gone down to some extent,” he said.
This seasonal price dip underscores the importance of local rice production and its affordability for families during festive periods.
