Meta to Test eBay Listings on Facebook Marketplace, Expanding Product Access
Share

Meta has disclosed that it will begin testing eBay listings on Facebook Marketplace in select countries, marking a significant step towards integrating the two platforms. The test, which will initially roll out in Germany, France, and the US, aims to provide Facebook Marketplace users with a wider variety of products available from eBay sellers. Consumers will be able to browse eBay’s product listings directly on Facebook Marketplace and, if they choose to purchase, will complete the transaction on eBay’s platform.

This collaboration is expected to benefit both Facebook Marketplace and eBay sellers. eBay sellers will gain exposure to Facebook’s vast audience, which includes millions of active users who engage with the platform for shopping. In return, Facebook Marketplace users will have access to a broader selection of products, enhancing the shopping experience for those browsing for goods.

Facebook Marketplace, with its estimated 491 million active users, has been a popular platform for social commerce. The platform is currently used by 250 million sellers worldwide and continues to experience growth in user engagement. In 2022 alone, Facebook Marketplace saw a 3.61% annual increase in users, and data shows that over 51% of social media consumers made their last purchase via Facebook Marketplace.

Meta’s initiative comes amidst scrutiny from the European Commission, which imposed a hefty $840 million fine in November 2024 for alleged abusive practices related to favoring Facebook Marketplace over other platforms. Meta has expressed its intention to appeal the fine and is working to address the concerns raised by the Commission. Despite this challenge, the company is continuing to push forward with its strategy of enhancing Facebook Marketplace’s capabilities and increasing its commercial potential.

However, the new feature, which will include eBay listings on Facebook Marketplace, will not be available in African countries, including Nigeria, during the test phase. The decision to exclude certain regions may limit the immediate impact of this collaboration, but Meta continues to expand Facebook Marketplace’s reach globally, with availability in 195 countries and territories as of 2024.

Facebook Marketplace was launched in 2016 to provide users with a convenient online space to buy and sell both new and used products locally. Since its launch, the platform has become a major player in the social commerce industry, helping users make transactions in their communities. The integration of eBay listings marks a significant evolution of the platform, allowing it to compete more directly with established e-commerce giants and further solidifying its place in the global online shopping ecosystem.
