MTN Partners with Meta to Improve WhatsApp Call Quality
Share

MTN Group has joined forces with Meta to improve the quality and reliability of voice and video calls on popular real-time apps, such as WhatsApp, in a move aimed at delivering a superior communications experience for millions of users.

Yahaya Ibrahim, Chief Technology Officer (CTO) of MTN Nigeria, expressed his excitement over the positive impact the collaboration is already having. “We’re excited about the improvements our users are already experiencing in call quality,” Ibrahim said, noting that the new upgrades mark a significant milestone in MTN’s commitment to enhancing digital experiences for its customers.

The partnership focuses on optimizing the interaction between mobile networks and real-time communication apps, ensuring a more stable, clearer, and high-quality experience for users. Diego Marí, Meta’s Head of Network Ecosystems Engineering, highlighted that the collaboration is a testament to how technological innovations can drive the improvement of network efficiency while maintaining the highest standard of real-time communication. “This partnership demonstrates how we can deliver superior real-time communication while continuing to optimize network efficiency,” said Marí.

The initiative will span 12 MTN markets across the African continent and aims to elevate the overall user experience by leveraging smarter, more efficient network performance. Since the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2024, MTN and Meta engineers have worked closely to address performance gaps, deploying targeted upgrades with the help of data analytics and extensive testing to improve call quality.

Nigeria has been chosen as the first country to roll out the new enhancements. Early results have shown a significant 50% improvement in key performance indicators (KPIs), indicating a substantial boost in call quality for MTN Nigeria customers. This marks a key development in MTN’s long-term strategy to expand digital services across its markets and provide innovative solutions for voice, data, and video services.

“This rollout underscores our commitment to delivering innovative digital experiences that cater to the evolving needs of our customers,” said MTN Nigeria in a statement. “We are focused on providing the most advanced, reliable, and high-quality communication services for our users.”

The enhanced voice and video call quality is expected to drive greater user satisfaction and engagement, particularly as more people rely on WhatsApp for personal and business communication. In addition to improving the user experience for existing MTN customers, this initiative also aligns with MTN’s broader goal of driving digital inclusion and creating smarter networks that empower individuals and businesses.

As MTN and Meta continue to refine the technology, future updates are expected to further expand the quality improvements and extend the partnership’s impact across additional markets.
