MTN Group has teamed up with UK-based video tech company Synamedia to launch a new pan-African streaming platform designed for mobile and fibre broadband users. The move positions MTN as a major contender in Africa’s rapidly evolving digital entertainment space, going head-to-head with global giants like Netflix, Showmax, Prime Video, and Multichoice.
The new platform will deliver both live television and on-demand content, supported by a flexible range of monetisation models—including subscriptions, ad-supported viewing, and free channels with targeted advertising. MTN says the goal is not just to entertain but to bridge the digital divide by making content more accessible, relevant, and affordable for African audiences.
“We see a unique opportunity to transform video consumption in Africa with high-quality, accessible, and relevant content,” said Selorm Adadevoh, Group Chief Commercial Officer at MTN. “This partnership enables us to leverage cutting-edge technology and deep customer insights to enhance entertainment experiences and drive digital inclusion.”
MTN’s strategy hinges on localising its content offerings. Rather than adopting a one-size-fits-all approach, the platform will curate shows, films, and channels tailored to the languages, cultures, and preferences of each country it serves. The service aims to reflect the daily realities and aspirations of African viewers, setting it apart from global competitors who often lack strong local content pipelines.
Synamedia will provide the technology backbone for the platform, using its cloud-based infrastructure to allow for rapid deployment and scale. CEO Paul Segre said the collaboration will empower MTN to “quickly deploy groundbreaking entertainment experiences” that are both innovative and financially viable.
“Thanks to MTN’s leadership and innovation, smartphone owners across Africa will be able to enjoy innovative linear TV and on-demand video,” Segre said. “By taking advantage of the breadth of our integrated, cloud-based portfolio, MTN will be able to create a groundbreaking set of offerings for customers and viewers that will drive new revenues.”
With millions of Africans already using MTN’s mobile and broadband services, the company is poised to integrate the streaming platform seamlessly into its existing digital ecosystem. As more Africans go online and demand for local digital content grows, MTN’s foray into streaming could reshape the continent’s entertainment landscape and accelerate its push for widespread digital inclusion.
