The Nasarawa State Government has launched the distribution of free fertiliser to 73,500 farmers across its 147 electoral wards in a bid to boost food production and strengthen food security in the state and Nigeria at large.
Announcing the initiative at a press conference in Lafia, the Senior Special Assistant on Public Affairs to the Governor, Mr. Peter Ahemba, said the effort aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Food Security Agenda. Each ward will have 500 farmers benefiting, while the chairmen of the state’s 13 local government areas have received 100 bags of fertiliser each for use on council-owned farms.
Ahemba noted that this move is part of Governor Abdullahi Sule’s wider agricultural reform plan. In support of this, the state government has cultivated 3,500 hectares of rice at its Jangwa farm in Awe Local Government Area. This builds on a 2024 initiative that saw 10,000 hectares of land acquired in Jangwa and 2,000 hectares already planted with rice.
The governor’s aide emphasized that the administration remains committed to improving the agricultural sector by ensuring timely access to modern inputs and creating an environment conducive to private sector investment.
Ahemba also disclosed that plans have been concluded to construct rural roads to connect farming communities to urban centres. The roads are expected to improve logistics and reduce post-harvest losses by making it easier for farmers to move produce to markets.
