The Nigerian Communications Commission has attributed the recent network service disruptions experienced by subscribers in parts of Abuja to challenges in diesel supply affecting telecommunications infrastructure operated by IHS Nigeria Limited.
In a statement issued on Saturday in Abuja, the Head of Public Affairs at the NCC said the commission was aware of the decline in service quality currently affecting telecom users in some areas of the Federal Capital Territory. The disruptions, according to the commission, are connected to ongoing actions by the National Oil and Gas Suppliers Association, which have interfered with the delivery of diesel to critical telecom sites.
IHS Nigeria Limited is a major independent provider of shared telecommunications infrastructure, including cell towers used by mobile network operators across Nigeria and other African markets. These facilities rely heavily on diesel-powered generators to maintain uninterrupted network services, particularly in areas with unstable power supply.
The commission explained that the diesel supply challenge has had a direct impact on the operation of several telecom sites, leading to service interruptions and degraded network performance for subscribers. This has affected voice calls, data services, and general connectivity, with implications for businesses and individuals who rely on stable communication services.
The NCC said it has begun taking proactive steps to address the situation by facilitating discussions between affected service providers and relevant stakeholders to ensure a swift resolution of the diesel supply issues. It noted that restoring normal service levels remains a priority, given the importance of telecommunications to economic activities, public services, and daily life.
The commission acknowledged the inconvenience caused to subscribers and assured the public that it is working closely with relevant government agencies and operators to stabilise services as quickly as possible. It added that updates would be provided as progress is made toward restoring full telecommunications services across Abuja.
The NCC reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring high-quality telecommunications services nationwide and thanked subscribers for their patience and understanding during the disruption. For many small businesses and service providers operating in Abuja, stable network connectivity remains critical to daily operations, customer engagement, and digital transactions, underscoring the urgency of resolving the current challenges.
