The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has trained women in Zamfara State on digital skills to help them compete and thrive in the country’s fast-growing digital economy.
The three-day programme, held at the Zamfara State Government House in Gusau, focused on bridging the digital knowledge gap among women, particularly those in rural areas. In his keynote address, the Executive Vice Chairman of NCC, represented at the event, said only 30 percent of women in Nigeria possess basic digital skills compared to over 50 percent of men. He stressed the need to close this gap to ensure inclusive participation in the digital space.
The Head of Digital Skills and Services at NCC said the training aligned with the federal government’s drive to strengthen the digital economy. She urged the beneficiaries to push beyond barriers in digital literacy and highlighted the support of the Zamfara State government and other stakeholders in making the training a reality.
The Executive Secretary of the Zamfara State Information Technology Development Agency expressed appreciation to NCC for bringing the programme to the state and pledged to monitor the growth and performance of the beneficiaries. The Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, represented at the event, also commended NCC and called for deeper collaborations to digitally advance the state.
A total of 100 women benefited from the training, receiving android smartphones and certificates of attendance. Participants said the programme exposed them to new skills in cybersecurity, digital marketing and content creation, which they believe will help them build careers and businesses in the digital economy.
