The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has inaugurated an ultra-modern digital ICT park at the University of Ibadan, marking a major step in the country’s push to foster innovation and bridge the digital divide in higher education.
Commissioned on Tuesday, the facility is one of six flagship digital infrastructure projects established by the NCC in select institutions across Nigeria. According to the Executive Vice-Chairman of the NCC, Aminu Maida, the initiative aligns with national efforts to drive economic transformation through technology. Speaking through Abraham Oshadami, the NCC’s Executive Commissioner of Technical Services, Maida described the park as a key driver of Nigeria’s digital economy ambitions.
“In today’s world, technology is one of the most powerful tools for economic and social advancement. For a growing economy like Nigeria’s, it offers immense potential for inclusive growth,” Maida stated. “The ICT park is a reflection of our vision to support innovation and digital entrepreneurship while translating research into commercially viable solutions.”
Branded “One Roof, All Possibilities,” the ICT park is designed as a multidisciplinary hub that houses cutting-edge infrastructure including high-capacity computer laboratories, simulation rooms, intelligent networking systems, collaborative workspaces, and multipurpose halls. The park is expected to serve as a catalyst for digital research, innovation, and entrepreneurship.
The establishment of the park is in line with the National Digital Economy Policy and Strategy and supports the strategic goals of the Ministry of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy.
Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ibadan, Kayode Adebowale, hailed the NCC’s intervention, describing it as timely and essential in preparing Nigerian students for the fourth industrial revolution. “Nations that will thrive in today’s digital age are those investing heavily in digital infrastructure and innovation,” Adebowale said. “The ICT Park aligns perfectly with our mission to become a world-class centre for research and digital excellence.”
He emphasized the university’s role in producing the next generation of leaders and innovators equipped to shape Nigeria’s future in a technology-driven global economy.
According to the News Agency of Nigeria, the ICT park at UI includes a 100-seat main hall, five specialised ICT hub halls, a 24-seater lounge with dual-computer workstations, multiple shared workspaces, and administrative offices. The facility is expected to serve both the university community and the broader innovation ecosystem in Oyo State.
As Nigeria deepens its digital transformation agenda, the NCC’s investment in academic institutions signals a long-term strategy to build innovation capacity and equip young Nigerians with the digital tools needed to compete globally.
