Mercy Crystal Initiative (MCI), a Non-Governmental Organization (NGO), in demonstrating their commitment to community service has successfully empowered approximately 200 less-privileged individuals in Ketu, Kosofe Local Council of Lagos State. The beneficiaries were provided with valuable resources, including free computer training, cash gifts, Point of Sale (POS) machines, and other tools essential for starting small businesses. According to Adejuyigbe Adesanmi, President of MCI, the empowerment initiative aimed to instill a sense of belonging among the recipients.
“MCI’s mission is to assist the less-privileged, widows, and youths by offering them employment opportunities for attaining independence,” shared Adesanmi, who is also a pastor. “Our goal is to empower them to become productive members of society, rather than being a burden. We traverse the streets of Lagos, reaching out to those in need.”
Rosemary Amadi, Secretary General of the organization, emphasized their desire to create a positive impact and alter the perception associated with NGOs. “We aspire to make a difference. When people hear ‘NGO,’ they often assume it solely focuses on acquiring funds, particularly from foreign donors. However, we aim to change that narrative,” stated Amadi. She further highlighted that the funds utilized for the empowerment program were generated internally, but the organization seeks supporters, sponsors, and partners to enhance their impact. Their ultimate goal is to establish a unique approach to empowering individuals and alleviating poverty within the community.
Expressing gratitude on behalf of the beneficiaries, Folashade Ojomo conveyed heartfelt appreciation to the organization for their generosity and pledged to make prudent use of the resources provided through the program.
