The National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) has unveiled a new Self-Service Enrollment Portal, giving Nigerians direct digital access to enroll in health insurance plans, manage their details, and activate coverage online.
The platform was launched on Wednesday during the National Health Financing Policy Dialogue in Abuja, themed “Reimagining the Future of Health Financing in Nigeria.” It is part of NHIA’s ongoing digital reforms to strengthen healthcare financing and accelerate the nation’s drive toward universal health coverage.
According to NHIA, the portal is designed to simplify access, eliminate administrative bottlenecks that have hindered enrollment, and provide a one-stop platform for account management.
How the Portal Works
The portal offers different entry points tailored to user categories:
- New Enrollment – for Nigerians not yet covered under any NHIA plan.
- NYSC Plan Activation – for National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members to digitally activate their mandatory health insurance.
- Existing Enrollee Login – for registered users to access coverage details, update records, and track benefits.
Users can log in with an email address, phone number, or National Identification Number (NIN), while a password reset feature ensures easy recovery for those who forget their credentials.
NHIA’s Statement on the Launch
Announcing the development on its official X handle, the Authority described the platform as a milestone in Nigeria’s health reform agenda:
“A New Era of Health Insurance in Nigeria – the NHIA Self-Service Portal is live.
With this portal, you can now enroll, manage your details, and secure your health, all from the convenience of your phone or computer. This marks a major step forward in our mission to achieve Universal Health Coverage.”
Why It Matters
The initiative aligns with the National Health Insurance Act 2022, which makes health insurance mandatory for all Nigerians.
By digitizing enrollment and verification, NHIA aims to reduce reliance on physical offices and make health insurance more accessible, particularly to underserved groups and younger populations.
Currently, over 70% of healthcare expenses in Nigeria are paid out-of-pocket, leaving households vulnerable to financial shocks during medical emergencies. Stakeholders say the new portal is a critical innovation that could lower financial hardship, boost trust in the system, and accelerate enrollment nationwide.
