The Nigeria Immigration Service has extended its contactless biometric passport application system to the United States, Brazil, Jamaica, and Mexico. The move marks the latest phase in the agency’s drive to simplify passport renewal for Nigerians living abroad.
In a statement issued Sunday via its official X page, the NIS Public Relations Officer said the contactless system launched in the U.S. on April 11, followed by Jamaica and Mexico on April 14. Brazil is also expected to roll out the service on the same date.
With the system now active in parts of North and South America, the NIS confirmed that the application is accessible through the Google Play Store under the name NIS Mobile. This app allows Nigerians overseas to renew their passports digitally without visiting a passport office for biometric enrollment. An iOS version is expected soon, along with a more enhanced app update for both Android and Apple users to improve accessibility and user experience.
The digital passport system has already been deployed in Canada, the UK, Ireland, and parts of Europe and Asia. The second phase of the diaspora service expansion began with its launch in Canada in November 2024, followed by the UK and Ireland in February 2025.
According to the NIS Comptroller General, the initiative aims to reduce the burden of passport acquisition and renewal for Nigerians abroad by offering a secure, efficient, and user-friendly process. By eliminating the need for physical visits, the contactless application system ensures faster verification and streamlined processing from anywhere with internet access.
The Immigration Service says the move is part of its broader strategy to adopt technology in improving global service delivery for the Nigerian diaspora.
