The Nigerian government has introduced the Contactless Passport Renewal System across Europe, allowing Nigerians in the diaspora to renew their passports entirely online. This expansion follows the system’s successful rollout in Canada and marks another step in the government’s efforts to modernize and streamline public services.
Minister of Interior Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, speaking at the launch event on Friday, emphasized that the initiative aligns with the administration’s Renewed Hope agenda, which aims to improve service delivery for Nigerians at home and abroad. According to him, the digital system eliminates traditional barriers associated with passport renewals, such as long waiting times and the need for physical visits to embassies.
“As with Canada, this innovative system is designed to eliminate the traditional hurdles of passport renewals. Now, eligible Nigerians in Europe can renew their passports entirely online from the comfort of their homes and offices,” he said.
He outlined three key objectives of the initiative, By removing the need for in-person visits, the government can significantly cut down processing times and reduce delays. Nigerians abroad will be able to access passport services more conveniently, regardless of their location. The adoption of digital solutions is part of Nigeria’s broader push toward e-governance and digital transformation, supporting the country’s ambition of achieving a $1 trillion economy.
Tunji-Ojo acknowledged the vital role of the Nigerian diaspora in national development and reiterated the government’s commitment to providing efficient and professional services. “The Nigerian diaspora is an integral part of the national fabric. It is our duty to ensure they have access to services that match the highest standards of professionalism and efficiency,” he stated.
He assured Nigerians that while the government is pushing for increased accessibility, security and transparency will remain a priority. “As a government, we will continue to uphold transparency without compromising security in all our operations. This launch is only the beginning; we are poised to expand these reforms by bringing government services closer to all Nigerians.”
The minister also emphasized that the Contactless Passport Renewal System is part of Nigeria’s long-term vision to modernize government services and embrace digital governance. “We look forward to a future where every Nigerian, whether at home or abroad, benefits from our efforts to modernize and humanize government services,” he added.
With this expansion, Nigerians living across Europe will now be able to renew their passports without the inconvenience of traveling to embassies or consulates, marking a major milestone in Nigeria’s digital transformation journey.
