Nigeria Secures N1 billion Airtel Grant to Train 25,000 in Digital Skills via 3MTT Program
Share

The Nigerian government has received a N1 billion grant from Airtel Africa Foundation to support its 3 Million Technical Talent (3MTT) initiative, a key part of President Bola Tinubu’s strategy to position the country as a global technology hub. The initiative, led by the Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani, aims to train and empower Nigerians with in-demand digital skills.

Tijani, after receiving the cheque from Airtel Africa Foundation Chairman Dr. Segun Ogunsanya, said the grant will be used to provide hands-on training, community engagement, and job placement opportunities for over 25,000 Nigerians. He emphasized that the support aligns with the government’s commitment to strengthening Nigeria’s digital workforce and accelerating its transition into a technology-driven economy.

“This funding will help equip Nigerians with the skills needed to thrive in the digital space,” Tijani said. “Airtel Africa Foundation’s collaboration demonstrates the role of the private sector in fostering innovation and expanding access to digital opportunities.”

Ogunsanya highlighted Airtel’s dedication to supporting Nigeria’s economic growth through technology and skill development. He described the grant as a strategic investment in Nigeria’s future, ensuring that young Nigerians are not just participants in the global digital revolution but leaders in it.

“Our N1 billion support is aimed at creating opportunities for young Nigerians to develop technical skills that will drive economic prosperity,” Ogunsanya stated.

The latest funding marks the second major boost for the 3MTT program, following a N1 billion agreement with telecom infrastructure provider IHS Towers in 2023. That deal included a commitment to financing the salaries of 37 learning community managers for three years and establishing digital learning hubs across the country.

Since its launch in 2023, the 3MTT program has made steady progress toward its goal of training three million Nigerians. The first cohort included 30,000 participants, representing 1% of the target, followed by an expansion to 270,000 trainees, bringing the total to 10% of the overall goal. The initiative focuses on various digital and technology-driven skills, including data analysis, cloud computing, digital marketing, SEO, UX/UI design, and project management software.

Tijani noted that future phases of the program will be implemented in collaboration with key stakeholders, including government agencies, educational institutions, development organizations, and private sector partners.

By securing strong financial backing from major industry players like Airtel Africa and IHS Towers, Nigeria is strengthening its position as a digital economy leader in Africa. As the 3MTT program continues to scale, it is expected to create a highly skilled workforce that can drive technological innovation and economic growth across various sectors.
