The Deputy President of the Nigerian Senate has empowered 4,183 students from the Kano North Senatorial District with scholarships to support their academic pursuits. The beneficiaries, who are studying at the Federal College of Education (Technical), Bichi, Kano State, include students enrolled in both the Nigeria Certificate in Education (NCE) and the degree programs.
Each NCE student received N20,000, while Degree students were awarded N50,000 in the disbursement exercise. The event was carried out by a delegation led by the Deputy Senate President’s Chief of Staff, Prof. Muhammad Abdallah, at the college theatre hall on Wednesday.
According to statements from the Deputy Senate President’s office, the scholarship initiative reflects a sustained investment in education across Kano North and beyond. “We are here, like every year, to bring support and scholarships to students from Kano North Senatorial District,” the office stated.
The scholarship program forms part of wider interventions that include support for institutions such as Bayero University Kano, Northwest University, and other Colleges of Education. Beyond scholarships, the Deputy Senate President has executed several developmental projects at FCE (Technical) Bichi, including the construction of academic blocks, the provision of solar streetlights, and the development of reading halls.
The Deputy Provost of the College, Dr. Bashir Abubakar, described the scholarship scheme as life-changing, noting that the college has benefited consistently over the past three years. “Every year, the number of beneficiaries keeps increasing. This clearly shows that education is a top priority. The ongoing construction of our administrative block and provision of solar streetlights have significantly improved learning and security at both the temporary and permanent sites,” he said.
Highlighting the importance of women’s education, the Special Adviser on Women Affairs to the Deputy Senate President, Hajiya Yardada Bichi, noted that about 60 percent of the beneficiaries are women. “Educating a woman is equivalent to educating an entire society,” she said.
Students who received the scholarships expressed gratitude for the timely intervention, describing it as impactful support that will aid their academic progress and reduce financial pressures.
This initiative reinforces the role of targeted scholarships in boosting educational opportunities for students, particularly in regions where access to quality education and resources remains a challenge.
