The Nigerian government, through the Unlock Training Programme, has disbursed N100 million to 200 youths to help them start businesses in their respective fields of expertise. Mrs. Abiola Arogundade, the Senior Special Assistant to President Bola Tinubu on Technical and Vocational Entrepreneurship Education (TVEE), explained that the programme followed a comprehensive process. Youths were initially asked to submit one-minute videos showcasing their TVEE skills, future plans, and how they wished to be supported by the government.
– Training: Approximately 10,000 participants underwent a 10-day intensive training session. The training covered crucial aspects of business management, including writing and executing business plans, creating executive summaries, business overviews, marketing strategies, pricing, money management, and risk management.
Awards and Grants:
– Grants: 120 participants with the best business plans received N500,000 each.
– Honorary Awards: 80 individuals were recognized for their outstanding skills in technical, vocational, and entrepreneurship fields.
– Solar Kiosks: Four solar-powered kiosks were awarded to support business development. The kiosks are designed for specific purposes such as hairdressing, catering and food vending, and general uses.

Mrs. Arogundade highlighted several initiatives introduced by the Tinubu administration to promote TVEE:
– Inclusion of TVEE in Student Loans: To ensure that students can finance their education in technical and vocational fields.
– Skills Council: Inaugurated within the Presidency to oversee skill development.
– Human Capital Development Council: Collaborates with governors under the National Economic Council.
– SUPA (Skill-Up Artisans) and ITF: Various other initiatives aimed at upskilling artisans and fostering technical expertise.

Dr. Tanko Sununu, the Minister of State for Education, emphasized that technical and vocational education is a key focus for the Ministry of Education.
