About 630 young people, women, and persons with disabilities in Edo State have commenced orientation for the Livelihood Improvement Family Enterprises in the Niger Delta (LIFE-ND) program, an agricultural empowerment initiative jointly supported by the Federal Government, the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), and the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC).
The training, which began on Tuesday, marks the start of an intensive capacity-building program aimed at promoting agribusiness, creating jobs, and enhancing food security across rural communities in Edo.
Speaking at the event, Governor Monday Okpebholo reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to transforming the state into a hub for modern agriculture and rural prosperity.
Represented by the Head of the Edo Agricultural Development Programme, Princewill Igbinedion, the governor said the LIFE-ND initiative aligns with his government’s vision to empower young farmers and turn small-scale farming into profitable ventures.
“With 630 incubatees participating, we are not just training individuals; we are breeding a new generation of innovators, leaders, and wealth creators who will drive Edo State towards self-sufficiency in food production,” Okpebholo said.
He noted that the government is integrating LIFE-ND projects into its broader agricultural transformation framework to ensure sustainability beyond donor support.
“Our government remains committed to supporting all LIFE-ND beneficiaries through improved access to inputs, extension services, value chain development, and linkages to markets,” he added.
The governor commended IFAD and the Federal Government, through the NDDC, for their consistent partnership, describing the collaboration as a model for inclusive agricultural development.
The Edo Project Coordinator of LIFE-ND, John Omoruyi, said Governor Okpebholo’s administration had demonstrated strong political will to strengthen food systems and empower rural youths through agriculture. He disclosed that large tracts of farmland had been allocated for participants in the program.
Also speaking, the Agribusiness Promotion Coordinator, Anthonia Esenwa, urged the trainees to take the programme seriously, warning that those who underperform would be replaced.
The National Coordinator of LIFE-ND, Dr. Abiodun Sanni, represented by Justina Osaegwiwa, said that while some communities were initially reluctant to participate, many have now embraced the project due to its visible impact.
A representative of the NDDC, Clementina Osabuohien, cautioned beneficiaries against diverting funds meant for agricultural purposes, emphasising the need for accountability and dedication.
