The Nigerian Government, through the Federal Ministry of Youth Development, has launched the Electric Tricycle Empowerment Initiative, distributing over 4,000 electric tricycles and motorcycles to youth beneficiaries nationwide. The program is designed to create self-employment opportunities, reduce transportation costs, and support the country’s transition to cleaner energy.
The official inauguration took place at Eagle Square, Abuja, with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s office overseeing the event. The initiative aligns with the government’s broader energy transformation agenda, aimed at promoting sustainable transport solutions and reducing carbon emissions across the country.
Minister of Youth Development, Comrade Ayodele Olawande, explained that the initiative is a Public-Private Partnership involving the Ministry, House of Destiny Global Services Ltd, and the National Commercial Tricycle and Motorcycle Owners and Riders Association (NATOMORAS). He emphasized that the programme targets both formal and informal youth, providing opportunities for tricycle riders, mechanics, technicians, and operators of charging stations.
“The electric tricycles will reduce transportation costs by up to 40% and offer a cleaner alternative to traditional fuel-powered vehicles,” Olawande said. “This initiative brings empowerment closer to the youth’s doorstep, promotes green energy adoption, and contributes to national economic growth.”
The programme addresses three critical objectives: creating jobs for informal youth, reducing dependence on petroleum and increasing operators’ income, and lowering carbon emissions to promote cleaner cities.
National President of NATOMORAS, Usman Gwoza, praised the initiative as a symbol of hope and an important step toward affordable, sustainable transportation. He called on the government to expand the program to further reduce youth unemployment and strengthen the country’s green economy.
The Electric Tricycle Empowerment Initiative is expected to provide long-term economic benefits, generate employment, and advance Nigeria’s commitment to sustainable energy, while offering youth a pathway to financial independence.
