The Federal Government has kicked off a N366 million, two-week emergency repair project on the Abuja-Kaduna Dual Carriageway, aiming to ease traffic and enhance road safety for travelers. The project, which started on October 2, 2024, focuses on fixing potholes and restoring severely damaged sections.
Contractor Messrs H&M (Nig.) Ltd is spearheading the effort, starting from Zuba in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) to Tafa at the Niger/Kaduna States border, according to a statement from the Ministry of Works.
“In order to bring relief to road users, the Federal Ministry of Works has commenced emergency repairs on failed portions of the Abuja-Kaduna Dual Carriageway,” the ministry’s statement read. “The contractor, Messrs H&M (Nig.) Ltd, mobilised to the site on October 2, 2024. The project covers Section I of the expressway from kilometre 0 + 00 (Zuba, FCT) to kilometre 31 + 200 (Tafa, Niger/Kaduna States’ border) with a two-week completion deadline. The approved contract sum is N366 million.”
During an inspection on October 5, 2024, Engr. Mohammed Goni, Director of Highways (North East Zone I), and Engr. Olufemi Adetunji, Director of Special Projects (North), stressed the importance of completing the project within the stipulated two weeks, warning that no extensions would be granted. Both officials emphasized that this road is crucial for economic growth, connecting northern and southern Nigeria.
Engr. Goni added that once this phase is completed, repairs on the remaining sections from Tafa to Kaduna will begin, demonstrating the government’s ongoing commitment to providing essential road infrastructure.
Lawrence Emmanuel, Project Supervisor for H&M (Nig.) Ltd, shared that work is progressing well, with efforts concentrated on cutting and reshaping damaged sections up to Dikko Junction in Niger State. Asphalting began on October 7, 2024. Despite the heavy traffic on the route, Emmanuel expressed confidence that the project would be completed on time.
Federal Controller of Works for the FCT, Engr. Yakubu Usman, also committed to daily site inspections to ensure proper oversight throughout the project.
This repair marks a significant step in maintaining one of Nigeria’s most vital road networks, ensuring smoother journeys for commuters and boosting economic activity across the country.
