The Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has approved an extension of the enforcement deadline for the Tinted Glass Permit requirement to August 12, 2025, following concerns raised by the public about the reactivated permit process.
This update was shared in a statement released by the Force Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, who said the move reflects the Nigeria Police Force’s commitment to a transparent and citizen-focused approach to digital reform.
The extension follows the April 2025 resumption of tinted glass permit issuance via a revamped digital platform. The upgraded system integrates identity verification through applicants’ National Identification Number (NIN) and Tax Identification Number (TIN) and was designed to tighten security and prevent abuse of tinted vehicles while ensuring a smoother user experience.
Adejobi noted that feedback from the public has been vital in shaping improvements to the platform, and that the grace period would allow for more refinements to prevent undue hardship for applicants. The police assured Nigerians that the process is being further simplified to make it more accessible, both physically and online, with stronger verification and less bureaucracy.
The digital permit system, accessible at (http://www.possap.gov.ng), features advanced security tools such as QR codes, digital holograms, and unique serial numbers—all aligned with the Motor Vehicles (Prohibition of Tinted Glass) Act of 1991. Applicants are expected to complete biometric capturing, identity verification, and background checks before receiving their permits, typically within 72 hours.
The Force emphasized that no additional charges beyond the approved fees should be incurred, urging citizens to report any cases of extortion or hidden charges during the application process via the hotline 09169967000.
The reactivation of the permit system follows a broader police reform process that began in 2024, after the permit was suspended in 2022 due to its abuse by criminal elements. In February 2024, the Police launched nationwide training for officers to support the roll-out of the improved digital system.
As the August 12, 2025, enforcement date approaches, the Nigeria Police Force assured the public of its commitment to safety, innovation, and efficient service delivery, and thanked Nigerians for their patience and cooperation during the transition.
