The Joint Tax Board (JTB) has announced new rates for national driver’s licenses and vehicle number plates, set to take effect on November 1, 2024. This decision aims to enhance the quality and security features of these essential identification items, aligning them with international best practices.
Under the revised rates, obtaining a three-year motor vehicle driver’s license will now cost N15,000, while a five-year license will be priced at N21,000. For motorcycle and tricycle drivers, the fees have also increased, with the three-year license now costing N7,000 and the five-year option priced at N11,000.
In addition to licenses, the cost of vehicle number plates has risen significantly. Standard private and commercial vehicle number plates will now start at N30,000. Fancy number plates will be set at N400,000, while motorcycle number plates will cost N12,000. The cost for dealer motor vehicle number plates has been established at N100,000, and government fancy motor vehicle number plates will now be priced at N120,000. Standard government number plates will be sold for N80,000, with fancy motorcycle plates priced at N50,000 and standard motorcycle plates at N20,000.
The JTB has emphasized that these new rates will come with improved security features, enhancing the identification process for drivers and vehicles across Nigeria.
Olusegun Adesokan, the Secretary of the JTB, highlighted the importance of public awareness regarding the price increases. He stated that the approval of the new rates depends on the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) effectively educating the public about the changes. “The secretariat has requested that the FRSC notify the JTB of its public engagement and sensitization plans to ensure seamless implementation of the revised rates,” he noted.
These adjustments reflect a significant change in the cost of essential transportation services, emphasizing the government’s commitment to improving the security and functionality of identification systems in Nigeria.
