Nigerians to Pay Higher Fees for Driver’s Licenses, Number Plates as New Rates take Effect June 2025
Share

Beginning Sunday, June 8, 2025, Nigerians will face increased costs for obtaining driver’s licenses and vehicle number plates, following the approval of new rates by the Joint Tax Board (JTB). The revised fees will apply across the country and reflect the introduction of enhanced security features as well as rising production costs.

According to a public announcement made in May 2025, the JTB stated that the adjustments are necessary due to the added security enhancements on both number plates and licenses, alongside other incidental production expenses. The board has instructed all relevant government bodies and vehicle licensing authorities to implement the updated rates.

Under the new pricing structure, a standard motor vehicle driver’s license will now cost N15,000 for three years and N21,000 for five years. For tricycle operators, the three-year license will cost N7,000, while the five-year option will be N11,000.

Number plates have also seen significant increases. Both private and commercial vehicle number plates will now cost N30,000. Articulated vehicle plates will cost N90,000, while dealer vehicle plates are set at N100,000. Out-of-season plates will be issued at N150,000. Fancy number plates now attract a fee of N400,000.

Government standard vehicle plates are priced at N80,000, and government fancy plates at N120,000. Motorcycle number plates will now cost N12,000, and fancy versions will be N50,000. Government motorcycle plates are set at N20,000 for standard and N50,000 for fancy.

This is not the first time such an upward review is taking place. In March 2021, the JTB approved similar increases following a meeting in Kaduna. At the time, standard private and commercial plates rose from N12,500 to N18,750, while fancy plates doubled from N80,000 to N200,000. Motorcycle number plates went from N3,000 to N5,000, and driver’s licenses increased from N6,000 to N10,000 for three years, and from N10,000 to N15,000 for five years.

As with the 2025 review, the 2021 increases were attributed to higher production costs and the integration of advanced security features.
