The Presidential Compressed Natural Gas Initiative (PCNGI) has successfully secured more than $491 million in private sector investments in its first year, marking a major milestone for Nigeria’s transportation and energy sectors. Launched by President Bola Tinubu in October 2023, the initiative aims to reduce fuel dependency by promoting the adoption of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) and Electric Vehicles (EVs).
The initiative has created over 9,000 direct jobs and 75,000 indirect jobs, with more than 30,000 vehicles converted to CNG. It has also stimulated industrial growth and enhanced environmental sustainability. Oluwagbemi, the Project Director, highlighted that over 200 vehicle conversion centers have been set up, with plans for 1 million conversions targeting public transport, ride-share operators, and government agencies.
The initiative has also delivered 421 CNG buses and 36 EV buses under the Renewed Hope Mass Transit Scheme. Alongside this, a new refueling infrastructure plan is underway to make CNG widely available across Nigeria. By June 2025, CNG will be accessible in 17 states, with expansion plans to reach 30 states by the end of the year.
The PCNGI is also addressing logistics costs by planning a Diesel Conversion Programme for the haulage industry, which is expected to reduce operational costs by up to 80%. Additionally, a partnership with universities will offer discounted CNG services and training programs.
Safety measures have been put in place with the launch of the Nigeria Gas Vehicle Monitoring System to ensure that only certified vehicles access refueling stations. The initiative is supported by various stakeholders, including NNPC and private companies, which are building refueling infrastructure.
With continued backing from the government, the PCNGI is set to transform Nigeria’s transport sector, driving job creation, sustainability, and economic growth.
