In a major push for Nigeria’s infrastructure development, the Federal Roads Maintenance Agency (FERMA) has commissioned a new set of modern road maintenance equipment, funded through a grant from Japan’s Marubeni Corporation. The equipment is expected to significantly improve the speed, cost-efficiency, and environmental sustainability of road repairs across the country.
At the commissioning event, FERMA’s Executive Officer hailed the milestone as the result of an eight-year journey, starting with early discussions and culminating in the successful implementation of a project aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s road maintenance capacity. He emphasized the need for ongoing collaboration, especially in technical training and long-term development, to maximize the impact of the donation.
Representing the Japanese delegation, Mr. Hideo described the initiative as a testament to the enduring friendship between Japan and Nigeria. “We are proud to support projects that promote sustainable infrastructure and economic growth,” he said.
The event drew key stakeholders, including members of the National Assembly, officials from the Federal Ministry of Works, professional associations, and foreign diplomats. Among the notable attendees were the President of the Nigerian Society of Engineers, Margaret Aina, as well as former FERMA Managing Directors Nuruddeen Rafindadi and G.C. Amuchi, who were honored for their contributions to the agency’s progress.
For small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the construction and engineering sectors, FERMA’s upgraded operational capacity could open up fresh opportunities. Faster and more reliable road maintenance may lead to improved project delivery timelines and expanded infrastructure contracts, offering a boost to local businesses within the industry.
With this development, Nigeria takes a step closer toward more efficient road management while strengthening international partnerships that support its infrastructure ambitions.
