Nigeria’s Telecom Industry will be fully Driven by alternative energy soon – NCC
Share

The Nigerian Communication Commission (NCC) has announced its strategic commitment to drive a comprehensive transition towards alternative energy sources within the telecommunications sector. This visionary initiative aims to encourage all players in the industry to embrace clean and sustainable energy solutions, effectively reducing carbon emissions and promoting a greener ecosystem.

Prof. Umar Danbatta, Executive Vice Chairman of NCC, unveiled this transformative plan during an engaging roundtable discussion that gathered academia, industry leaders, and stakeholders. Speaking at the event in Lagos, Danbatta emphasized the NCC’s intention to introduce pioneering policies that would incentivize telecom operators to integrate renewable energy sources into their operations.

In this regard, the policy is expected to serve as a roadmap for telecom service providers to actively contribute to a cleaner and more sustainable future. Beyond its positive environmental impact, this policy is projected to stimulate innovation and forge new business opportunities within the telecommunications landscape.

Danbatta underscored the importance of collaborative efforts with academia and other stakeholders to achieve these transformative objectives. He acknowledged the pivotal role of academia in advancing research and innovation that can reshape industries. The telecom industry’s journey toward clean energy will greatly benefit from the expertise, insights, and knowledge of academic institutions.

“The expertise and insights of academia will guide us in exploring viable alternative sources of clean energy that can be harnessed to ensure a sustainable energy supply for the telecommunications industry,” Danbatta stated. He also highlighted the NCC’s dual aim of promoting research that harnesses digital technology to enhance Nigerians’ quality of life.

Danbatta highlighted that the telecom sector occupies a central position in the ongoing global digital transformation. Recognizing the significance of this role, the NCC aims to tap into the sector’s potential to improve citizens’ lives while aligning its growth with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The adoption of renewable energy sources and energy efficiency is key to achieving the outlined objectives. Studies have indicated that this approach, combined with electrification, could significantly reduce energy-related carbon emissions by over 90%. The NCC’s forward-looking strategy envisions the telecommunications sector as a potent force in contributing to the global energy transition.

Ubale Maska, Executive Commissioner for Technical Services at NCC, echoed the urgency of embracing sustainable practices. As the telecom sector stands as a vital pillar of modern society, Maska stressed its pivotal role in leading the way towards cleaner and greener energy sources. By taking proactive steps towards adopting renewable energy solutions, the industry can tackle energy challenges while ushering in a more sustainable and prosperous future for Nigeria.

With this landmark initiative, Nigeria’s telecom industry sets a progressive example for sustainable practices, aligning itself with global environmental imperatives and ushering in a new era of clean energy innovation that resonates with both the aspirations of the nation and the evolving demands of the modern world.
