NIMC Warns Nigerians Against Unauthorized NIN Modifications
Share

The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has urged Nigerians to modify their National Identification Number (NIN) details only through its official self-service portal to protect their data from fraud.

In a statement released on March 10, 2025, NIMC’s Head of Corporate Communications, Dr. Kayode Adegoke, emphasized that all NIN modifications should be done exclusively on [SelfserviceModification.nimc.gov.ng](https://SelfserviceModification.nimc.gov.ng). The commission warned against using unauthorized platforms, stressing that such actions could expose personal information to identity theft.

NIMC assured Nigerians that its self-service portal is secure, allowing users to update their details remotely while ensuring data integrity. The platform enables modifications without requiring a visit to an enrollment center.

NIMC has outlined the necessary steps and documents for modifying details such as date of birth, name, address, and phone number.

Date of Birth Modification:

– Log in to the self-service portal and select the modification option.

– Make the required payment via Paystack.

– Enter and validate the National Population Commission (NPC) certificate number.

– Upload the NPC certificate and any supporting documents.

– Submit the request, review changes, and tick the attestation box before final submission.

– Once approved, a new NIN slip will be sent via email.

  • Those who have lost their birth certificate must complete the birth attestation process at nationalpopulation.org.ng before proceeding with their modification request.

Required Documents for NIN Modifications:

– Date of Birth: Individuals born before 1992 must present a digitized NPC attestation certificate, while those born after 1992 need a digitized NPC birth certificate.

– Name Changes: Require a court affidavit, newspaper extract, marriage certificate (if applicable), and other government-issued identification.

– Address Updates: Require a utility bill, tenancy agreement, or attestation letter from a community leader.   Phone Number Changes: Require a police report and must be entered without the “0” after the “+234” country code.

NIMC reiterated that modifying NIN details through unauthorized platforms could lead to security risks and identity fraud. Nigerians are advised to use only the official portal for any modifications.
