Share

The National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) has announced a strategic partnership with TikTok aimed at fostering digital transformation and creating a safe online environment for human and artificial intelligence (AI) practices in Nigeria.

During a visit by a team from TikTok to NITDA’s Corporate Headquarters in Abuja, Director General Kashifu Inuwa emphasized the importance of collaboration to drive digital inclusion, aligning with President Bola Tinubu’s priority of strengthening national security for peace and prosperity. Inuwa highlighted the significance of content moderation strategies in addressing online challenges such as hate speech, misinformation, and cyberbullying, particularly concerning the protection of minors.

With the Code of Practice for Interactive Computer Service Platforms/Internet Intermediaries in place, NITDA has been proactive in ensuring digital safety in accordance with global best practices. Inuwa emphasized the need for collaboration among organizations and institutions to achieve common goals toward service delivery and national advancement.

Key areas of collaboration with TikTok include advancing digital literacy, capacity building, knowledge sharing, training, and curbing misinformation to create a safer cyberspace and empower Nigerian users online. Inuwa highlighted TikTok’s role in allowing creative expression through various features, including filters, stickers, and editing tools, and its potential to serve as a platform for educational content, entertainment, and comedy.

Mrs. Tokunbo Ibrahim, Head of Government Regulation and Public Policy at TikTok Nigeria and West Africa, commended NITDA for its initiatives and policies aligned with TikTok’s objectives. She highlighted TikTok’s collaboration with projects like the Africa Creator Hub, aimed at supporting and empowering tech creators to explore the platform’s features, change narratives, and add value to their content creation endeavors.

The partnership between NITDA and TikTok reflects a commitment to leveraging digital platforms for positive social impact, fostering creativity, and promoting a safer online environment for Nigerian users.
