The North-West Development Commission (NWDC) has opened applications for its 2025/2026 Foreign Scholarship Scheme, targeting outstanding students from Nigeria’s North-West region. The initiative, announced in a recent notice, is aimed at promoting academic excellence and building human capital across the region.
The scholarship is open to individuals from Jigawa, Kaduna, Kano, Katsina, Kebbi, Sokoto, and Zamfara states who intend to pursue undergraduate, Master’s, or PhD studies in approved fields such as Engineering, Medical Sciences, ICT, and Education at reputable foreign institutions.
The NWDC, established under the 2024 Act signed into law by President Bola Tinubu, emphasized that the programme is part of its broader commitment to drive regional development and provide world-class educational opportunities for indigenes.
To be eligible, undergraduate applicants must have five O’Level credits in English, Mathematics, Biology, Physics, and Chemistry. Master’s applicants must hold a minimum of Second Class Upper in their first degree, while PhD candidates must have at least a 4.00 CGPA in their Master’s programme. The age limit is 35 years for undergraduate and Master’s applicants, and 40 years for PhD candidates.
Applicants must apply through the official NWDC portal at [nwdc.gov.ng/scholarships] documents include a CV, educational certificates, proof of indigene status, NYSC certificate, international passport, birth certificate, academic transcripts, and a letter of motivation.
In a related development, the Petroleum Technology Development Fund (PTDF) has also launched its 2025/2026 Overseas Postgraduate Scholarship Scheme. This fully funded programme supports MSc and PhD studies in the UK, Germany, France, Malaysia, and at the PTDF College of Petroleum and Energy Studies in Kaduna. It covers tuition, return flights, health insurance, living expenses, and research-related fees.
Both initiatives reflect a growing national effort to equip Nigerians with global academic exposure and technical skills, especially in sectors critical to the country’s development.
