The Nigerian Railway Corporation has announced the conclusion of its 50 per cent fare reduction on passenger train services introduced during the yuletide season, with normal pricing resuming across all corridors from January 5, 2026.
The corporation said the festive discount, which officially ended on Sunday, January 4, recorded strong passenger patronage nationwide, as thousands of Nigerians took advantage of the reduced fares to travel safely and affordably during the holiday period. The initiative was introduced to ease the financial pressure of festive travel while encouraging wider adoption of rail transportation.
According to the corporation, passengers responded positively to the intervention, describing it as timely and impactful. Throughout the period, steady turnout was recorded across major standard gauge corridors, including Lagos–Ibadan, Abuja–Kaduna and Warri–Itakpe, as well as on narrow gauge Mass Transit Train services. Stations reportedly experienced orderly boarding, smooth departures and consistent service delivery.
Operational performance remained largely stable during the festive season, with most services running as scheduled and passenger capacity effectively managed across routes. The corporation noted that the operations were mostly hitch-free, attributing the outcome to the professionalism and dedication of railway staff, as well as effective coordination with security agencies and other stakeholders.
Ticketing processes, both online and at stations, were said to have functioned efficiently, while customer service teams provided support to passengers, particularly first-time rail users. Media coverage also played a role in boosting public awareness and shaping a positive perception of rail transport during the holiday period.
Beyond passenger travel, the festive operations highlighted the growing relevance of rail transport to Nigeria’s broader economic activities. For small businesses, traders, and logistics-dependent MSMEs, reliable and affordable rail services during peak periods help reduce travel costs, improve mobility, and support the movement of goods and people across regions.
As normal fares resume, the corporation reaffirmed its commitment to improving service delivery, expanding access to rail transportation,n and supporting people-focused national development initiatives. It assured passengers that efforts will continue to enhance efficiency, comfort and safety across all train services nationwide, as rail remains a critical pillar of Nigeria’s transport and economic infrastructure.
